Brendan Muckian-Bates is a Policy & Advocacy Associate with the Appalachian Citizens’ Law Center where he works on federal and state policy efforts related to black lung disease, coal miner health and safety, and flood resilience in the Appalachian region. A former public school teacher for seven years, Brendan’s passion for social and economic justice in Appalachia is shaped by his experiences fighting for stronger public services in West Virginia.
His professional focus combines community advocacy with research on the intersections of labor rights, education, and environmental justice. He is a co-founder and steering committee member for the Appalachian Flood Resilience Coalition, as well as serving on the steering committee for the Appalachian Resiliency Network and the Healthy Waters Coalition.
