David Satterfield currently serves as Interim Associate Vice President, overseeing the Office of Innovation and Commercialization, the Regional Research Institute, the Water Research Institute, and the Institute of Sustainability and Energy Research. In this role, he provides leadership for initiatives that advance research, innovation, and engagement across the university.

He also continues to serve as Director of Asset Development, where he works to strengthen partnerships with the West Virginia business community and with organizations in the defense and energy sectors, supporting collaboration and applied research opportunities.

Previously, Satterfield served as Executive Director of the West Virginia Development Office from October 2001 through January 2005. Prior to that appointment, he held senior leadership positions at West Virginia University, including Chief of Staff and Vice President for Institutional Advancement, serving as chief advisor to the University President, leading government relations, and coordinating institutional administrative strategy. He also served as Director of the gubernatorial transition following the 2000 election and later as Chief of Staff to Governor Bob Wise.

A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Satterfield earned both Bachelor and Master of Music degrees from West Virginia University. He joined the College of Creative Arts faculty in 1983 and remains a tenured Associate Professor in the School of Music, reflecting a long-standing commitment to teaching, scholarship, and public service.
